Three ways to get XMR

Which route fits depends on what you hold now and how you want to pay.

• Swap crypto you already hold. The shortest route if you have BTC, ETH, stablecoins, LTC or SOL. On SilentXMR there is no account and no ID: you send the coin and receive XMR at your own Monero address.
• Buy on an exchange that lists XMR. You need an account, you go through that exchange's verification, and XMR has to be offered where you live. The table below shows which big exchanges list it.
• Trade peer to peer. Networks built on Haveno, such as RetoSwap, let you pay another person by bank transfer, cash or a payment app, with the coins held in multisig escrow until the trade completes. See Haveno vs a swap service.

How to buy Monero with BTC or USDT, step by step

This route works almost everywhere, because nearly every exchange and crypto app sells bitcoin and stablecoins.

1. Get a Monero wallet. Install a wallet such as Feather, Cake Wallet or the Monero GUI wallet, and write down the seed phrase. Copy your receive address: it starts with 4 or 8.
2. Have a coin to swap. If you already hold BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL, skip this step. If not, buy one of them wherever you normally buy crypto. You can send it from your own wallet or straight from the exchange.
3. Create a swap. Choose the coin and amount in the swap card, paste your Monero address and create the order. You see the exact amount of XMR you will get, and it is locked when the order is created.
4. Send the exact amount to the deposit address on your order, on the network shown. Keep your order ID.
5. Receive XMR. Once your deposit confirms, the XMR is sent to your address by hand, and the payout transaction appears on your order page.

Which big exchanges list XMR (checked 18 October 2026)

We checked each exchange's own public market data and announcements on 18 October 2026. Listings change, so check again before you sign up. All of these exchanges work with accounts and their own verification rules; Kraken, for example, says you can buy and sell crypto once you are verified.

Exchanges not in this table were not checked. A listing tells you an exchange has an XMR market, not that it is available in your country.

Where to keep your XMR

Any Monero wallet that shows a receive address works with a swap or an exchange withdrawal. Three common ones:

• Feather Wallet: a desktop Monero wallet. It has no built-in buying or swapping, so you send XMR to it from a swap or an exchange. See our Feather guide.
• Cake Wallet: a multi-coin wallet with in-app swaps through partners, and fiat purchases through providers such as MoonPay and Onramper. What you can buy depends on the provider and your region. See our Cake Wallet guide.
• Monero GUI wallet: the official wallet from getmonero.org.

Write down your seed phrase and keep it offline. Anyone who has it can spend your XMR. More options in Monero wallets compared.

Buying XMR with cash or a bank transfer

SilentXMR only swaps crypto. To pay fiat for XMR directly, you need an exchange that offers XMR where you live, or a peer-to-peer network. LocalMonero, which many people used for this, closed in 2024 (what happened and what replaced it).

getmonero.org keeps a community page of exchanges and peer-to-peer options, including Haveno's RetoSwap network and Bisq, and notes that the list is for information and not an endorsement. Its FAQ says you can buy Monero from an exchange or from an individual, and that exchanges are the most common way.
