Feather Wallet: set up a Monero (XMR) wallet and fund it
Feather is a free, open-source Monero wallet for desktop computers. This guide follows Feather's own docs to set it up, then shows the quickest way to get XMR into it if you hold other crypto.
Quick answer
- What it is: a free, open-source Monero wallet for Linux, Tails, Windows and macOS. Latest release 2.8.1 (14 April 2025).
- Setup: File → New/Restore → Create new wallet, write the 16-word seed on paper, set a password.
- To receive: open the Receive tab and copy an address.
- To fund it: Feather has no built-in buying or swapping. Swap BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL to XMR here and paste your Feather address.

What Feather Wallet is
Feather describes itself as a free, open-source Monero wallet for Linux, Tails, Windows and macOS, and its code is licensed under BSD-3. It only holds Monero.
By default it connects to a random node from a curated list of remote nodes, so you don't download the Monero blockchain yourself. You can point it at your own node instead. It works with Tor out of the box and, by default, switches to Tor after the first sync.

Download and verify Feather
Download Feather only from featherwallet.org/download. The site publishes a GPG-signed list of file hashes, and the signing key is in Feather's Git repository. Its fingerprint is 8185 E158 A333 30C7 FD61 BC0D 1F76 E155 CEFB A71C.
Checking the hash of the file you downloaded against that list confirms you have the genuine release before you run it.
Create a new wallet
- Open Feather and go to File → New/Restore, then choose Create new wallet.
- Feather shows a 16-word seed (a Polyseed). Write it down on paper and store it somewhere safe. Feather's docs say not to save it on your computer or send it anywhere online.
- Give the wallet a name and choose the folder to save it in.
- Set a password. It encrypts the wallet files on this computer. The seed is what restores the wallet anywhere else.
- Click Create/Open wallet. Feather connects to a node and syncs.
A Polyseed stores the wallet's creation date, so you won't need a restore height when you restore from it later.
Find your Feather receive address
- Open the Receive tab.
- If no addresses are listed, click Create New Address.
- Copy the address with the copy button. Feather's docs warn never to write an address down by hand, because one wrong character can lose the funds.
Every address in the list belongs to the same wallet account, and used addresses are hidden automatically. Subaddresses start with 8.
Got your Feather address? Fund it with XMR now.
- Kraken's live price minus 0.5%. You see exactly what you get before you send.
- Your rate is locked the moment you create the order. No countdown, no re-quote.
- BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL in, XMR out to your address. Or the other way round.
Get XMR into Feather
Feather doesn't sell or swap coins, so XMR has to come in from somewhere else: a swap, an exchange withdrawal or another person. If you hold another coin, a swap is the shortest route:
- In the swap card, choose the coin you hold: BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL.
- Paste your Feather receive address as the XMR address.
- Create the order. You see the exact XMR amount, at Kraken's price minus 0.5%, and it is locked at that moment.
- Send the exact amount to the deposit address on your order.
- Once your deposit confirms, the XMR is sent by hand to your Feather address. It appears in Feather once the Monero network picks it up.

Restore Feather from a seed
- Go to File → New/Restore and choose Restore wallet from seed.
- Choose the seed type: Polyseed (16 words), a 25-word seed, or a 14-word seed from Feather versions before 2.0.0.
- For a 25-word seed, enter the restore height or the date the wallet was created, so the sync starts from the right point.
- If you protected the seed with a passphrase, enter it under Options.
Get Monero in your own wallet. No account, no ID.
- Kraken's live price minus 0.5%. You see exactly what you get before you send.
- Your rate is locked the moment you create the order. No countdown, no re-quote.
- BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL in, XMR out to your address. Or the other way round.
Questions
Is Feather Wallet free?
Yes. Feather is free and open source, licensed under BSD-3.
Which systems does Feather run on?
Linux, Tails and Whonix, Windows 10 or newer, and macOS on Intel and Apple Silicon, according to its download page.
Can I buy XMR inside Feather?
No. Feather's feature list has no buying or exchange. You can swap BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, LTC or SOL to XMR on SilentXMR and send it straight to your Feather address.
Does Feather download the whole Monero blockchain?
No. By default it connects to a random node from a curated list of remote nodes. You can connect it to your own node instead.
Can I use a Ledger or Trezor with Feather?
Yes. Feather's docs list Ledger Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, Stax and Flex, and Trezor Model T, Safe 3 and Safe 5.
What is the difference between a 16-word and a 25-word seed?
Feather creates 16-word Polyseeds, which store the wallet creation date. It also restores 25-word seeds, the type used by the official Monero wallets, and older 14-word Feather seeds. A Polyseed can be shown as 25 words, but a 25-word seed cannot be turned into a Polyseed.
Does Feather work with Tor?
Yes, out of the box. By default it switches to Tor after the first sync. Questions about a SilentXMR swap go to service@silentxmr.com.
